PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
Portland police said they have identified the young man who died early Monday morning when the car he was driving crashed in Portland's Montavilla neighborhood.
Investigators said the car driven by 17-year-old Juan Cruz-Morales was traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on 74th Avenue when it reached the T-intersection at Northeast Halsey Street. Cruz-Morales was unable to negotiate the turn and crashed into a utility pole.
Portland Fire & Rescue personnel arrived and were able to extract the passenger, 24-year-old Guadelupe Perez-Rodriguez, from the vehicle. Medical personnel determined that Cruz-Morales was deceased at the scene.
Officers from the Traffic Division's Major Crash Team responded and conducted an investigation into the crash. It is not known if drugs or alcohol were a factor at this time.
