Toddler found alive in home with mother's body

There was a sad discovery in southeast Portland Wednesday.

Police found a woman dead in her home and her 2-year-old son alone with the body.

Officers came by to do a welfare check at the home in the 10000 block of Southeast Long Street about 8:30 a.m.

They said 40-year-old Micaela Quinn's friend called for help because she hadn't seen her or her son for several days and she knew Quinn had medical issues.

When officers went in the house, they found Quinn's body and she clearly had been dead for a while.

They said her son was inside with her. He was not hurt, just hungry and thirsty, according to police.

Police believe the boy had been alone with his mother's body for at least two days.

Neighbors said they didn't notice anything wrong at the home and they can't imagine what the child must have gone through.

"Devastated," said Amber Sawney, holding her own son close. "You know, if anything happened to me I'd feel the same way for him. A little boy by himself, no mom, nobody to take care of him. It's sad."

Doctors determined that Quinn died of natural causes.

Her son was taken to the hospital as a precaution, but he is healthy and doing fine.
