Deteriorated roses being replaced at local park

Posted: Updated:

Volunteers are getting a north Portland park in tip-top shape so it can bloom into its 100th year.

Portland Parks and Recreation and a group called Friends of Peninsula Park Rose Garden are working to remove about 3,000 roses that are deteriorating and showing signs of stress.

In February, the flowers will be replaced with new, donated roses, valued at more than $75,000. Volunteers say the new roses are a healthier, disease-resistant variety that do not need as much pesticide. They are also easy to maintain.

The new roses are expected to be blooming by the time Peninsula Park celebrates its centennial in June.
