PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland police need your help to track down the driver who hit and killed a man Wednesday night.

Investigators say 60-year-old David Eklund was walking in a crosswalk at Southeast 71st and Powell Boulevard about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday when the driver struck him and took off.

Witnesses said the driver briefly stopped after the crash, then left the scene. Police say he was last seen heading westbound on Powell Boulevard in a black SUV.

The victim was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries and died a short time later.

"I'm hoping somebody catches the person. Yes, you made a mistake but you killed my husband," said Eklund's wife, Cindy.

The Traffic Division Major Crash Team was on scene for several hours trying to piece together what happened.

The suspect vehicle is described as a small, dark-colored SUV. It is not known what type of body damage may exist on the SUV.

The driver is described as a white man in his 30s or 40s with short, black hair.

If you have any information about the crash, you're asked to call Portland police at 503-823-2103.
