A former high school football player from Vancouver is in critical condition tonight, after suffering a serious head injury when he was attacked in California.
Tyler Burton, 21, a Mountain View High School Grad, is in a medically-induced coma and doctors said the extent of his brain injuries is unknown.
Burton is a sophomore running back for Shasta College in Redding, CA.
Police said Burton was out after Saturday's football game with a group of friends celebrating Halloween. Burton accidentally bumped into someone while walking down the street, and that person turned around and punched him, according to police.
Investigators said Burton was punched with such force it knocked him to the ground, and he slammed his head on the pavement.
Police said the suspect, Andres Rodriguez, ran off after the fight. He was found about a block away, and was arrested on assault charges.
Burton was rushed to the hospital where he underwent surgery to remove a blood clot.
"For something like this to happen and for it to be so severe is just shocking to the entire family, and the entire community," said Burton's close friend Christina Van Delden.
Since this weekend family said he has made some minor improvements, until Wednesday, when he suffered stroke.
Now, doctors said his potential for survival is still very much in question.
"We strongly believe in power of prayer, we are waiting for God's miracles to come through and just giving him time to come through," said Van Delden.
"Swelling of the brain is so dangerous we just have to give him time to bring swelling down."
Van Delden said before Burton was induced into a coma, he was able to move his arms and legs which is a good sign he is not paralyzed.
Van Delden has set up a Facebook page for friends and family to get updates on Burton's condition. It also explains how you can help the family during this difficult time.
