Deputies were engaged in a standoff near Clatskanie throughout the day and long into the night Friday. The suspect was finally taken into custody after 10 hours, after a struggle with police.

Deputies said it started on Co Op Road west of Clatskanie at 2:20 p.m. They received reports that Cary Woodward had "gone berserk" during a dispute.

Investigators said he began firing a rifle in a house. There is no indication he fired directly at the victims or at law enforcement officers.

The people in the home got out and called 911 from a neighbor's house.

Deputies said Woodward has a criminal history including an arrest for murder. He was convicted of a lesser offense of manslaughter in that case.

The countywide critical response team was called out, along with the Oregon State Police SWAT team.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office, along with officers from Clatskanie, Rainier, Columbia City, Saint Helens and Scappoose all assisted in the standoff.

At 8 p.m. deputies said Woodward had not responded to any of their attempts to communicate with him and they believe alcohol was a factor.

Oregon State Police SWAT team members took Woodward into custody around 12:10 a.m. after a short struggle. The suspect was transported to an area hospital with unknown injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

Woodward is facing charges of menacing and felon in possession of a firearm, among other charges.
