Winter shelter opens to Portland families

Posted: Updated:

Homeless families now have a warm place to sleep in Portland this winter. Multnomah County and Human Solutions opened The Family Winter Shelter in northeast Portland Thursday night.

The shelter will be open every night from now until the end of March, organizers said. It provides families with a warm place to sleep and something to eat.

Tiffany Wright, a mother of three, just moved to her own apartment. But she's had to use the shelter in the past, Wright said.

"It meant a lot. It was a little punch in your pride, but your pride gets built back up when you go through it all," she said. "It's awesome!"

Right now, the shelter is looking for donations to make it through the winter, organizers said. If you're interested in helping, you can bring food, clothing and bedding donations to the shelter, located at the Parkrose Community United Church of Christ on Northeast Halsey Street in Portland.
