PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A Portland street entertainer who played his trumpet on the west side of the Hawthorne Bridge died over the weekend.

Portland police said Kirk Reeves died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His body was discovered at Bybee Lake in North Portland on Sunday.

After Reeves' death, police and the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office asked for the public's help in finding Reeves' family so they could notify them of his death. On Thursday, they tracked down Reeves' sister.

Reeves was well known to Portlanders for wearing a white jacket and Mickey Mouse hat while he played his trumpet at the west end of the Hawthorne Bridge. He also performed in parks around Portland.

The Portland Police Bureau said in a statement that many of its officers knew Reeves because he often smiled and waved at officers who saw him playing music.

A candlelight vigil for Reeves is being planned for Nov. 18. More information is available at the Facebook event page.
