A chase in southeast Portland left a trail of destruction in front of homes and businesses Thursday morning.

Around 1:45 a.m., police tried to stop 37-year-old Ronald Nelson after observing what they described as "possible drug activity" while his SUV was parked at Southeast 122nd Avenue and Market Street.

Police said Nelson, who was behind the wheel of a Dodge Durango, didn't stop for police and tried to elude them by driving around the block twice. He struck two parked cars and a mailbox, but then, on the second lap, he crashed into the back of a small office complex at 2809 S.E. 122nd Ave.

A large portion of the brick wall and the interior of the building were damaged by the crash.

After the wreck, police said Nelson jumped out of the SUV and tried to run off on foot. He was quickly apprehended by officers.

Nelson suffered minor injuries in the crash and was taken to a Portland hospital to be treated.

In addition to finding a small amount of drugs inside the SUV, police said, officers found body armor as well.

Nelson was booked into jail on the following charges: felon in possession of body armor, attempt to elude by vehicle, possession of heroin, possession of methamphetamine, attempt to elude on foot, failure to perform the duties of a driver (four counts), reckless driving and theft in the second degree by receiving.

He'll be arraigned Friday.
