FOREST GROVE, OR (KPTV) -

Local veterans bridged the gap between the past and the present at Forest Grove High School on Thursday.

Each year, the school honors veterans at a special assembly. After the students are seated in the gym, the veterans march in to a round of applause.

The school band also plays the anthems from each military branch, and the veterans who served in each branch then stand while their anthem is played.

"It just brings tears to my eyes for the people that have suffered for our country," said Lynn Harrel, a U.S. Army veteran. "I'm so patriotic and to see the flag, it's just awesome."

The veterans said the students were respectful and that it means a lot to them that the community cares.

"It means you get a lot across to these young folks and let them know what the military is all about and the price of freedom and what it's all about," said John Kalmbach, another U.S. Army veteran.

The keynote speaker was Paul McCahon, a retired U.S. Army sergeant who was a helicopter gunner in Vietnam.
