GLADSTONE, OR (KPTV) -

Police arrested a third suspect Thursday in the 2011 killing of a Gladstone woman who was found dead at her beauty salon.

Jason Jaynes, the 31-year-old son of fellow suspect Susan Campbell, now faces charges of attempted aggravated murder and criminal conspiracy of a felony.

Jaynes, Campbell and former Gladstone police Sgt. Lynn Benton are all accused of taking part in the May 2011 killing of Debbie Higbee-Benton, who was Benton's estranged wife.

A detective previously testified that Benton was behind a plan to kill his wife, and that he offered Campbell $2,000 to carry out the murder at Higbee-Benton's salon.

Court documents show that plan was in the making for more than a year, and Benton met with the mother and son at least three different times to discuss the murder.

At this point, it's not immediately clear what role Jaynes is alleged to have played.

He had been a resident of Gladstone, but is believed to have been living in Seaside with his aunt since shortly after the homicide, police said.

"I guess it just makes you aware of who's around you; you don't know everyone no matter what the circumstances are," said Jaynes' neighbor, Stephen Anderson.

U.S. Marshals, Oregon City police and Oregon State police took Jaynes into custody around 1:30 p.m. in Gladstone during a traffic stop. His bail has been set at $250,000.

"It's really sad, and it's unbelievable," said Jaynes' neighbor, Louis Neubecker. "It's quite shocking to know that one of our neighbors could do something like that."

Meanwhile, Benton, who is now living as a man after a gender transition, is being held without bail on charges of aggravated murder, solicitation to commit murder, conspiring to commit aggravated murder and attempted murder.
