It was about 8 a.m. on Nov. 15, 2002, when a resident in a duplex on Northeast Graham Street saw someone lying in a Honda Accord in the back parking lot, Portland police cold case homicide detectives said.
"One of the occupants of the duplex saw someone and called 911," said Detective Meredith Hopper.
When officers arrived, they found the body of 20-year-old Deaustin Duckett.
Investigators said Duckett had been shot to death.
What was unclear, Hopper said, is why Duckett was in the neighborhood. He didn't live at either of the duplex units.
Hopper said Duckett was Portland-raised, but at the time of his death, he was living in Vancouver, WA.
Police said he was influenced by street life and had challenges in his life that may have led to his death.
That same week, there were two other murders in north and northeast Portland.
A 25-year-old man was shot to death in northeast Portland; and Asia Bell, 24, was shot on her front porch on North Mississippi Avenue.
In 2007, the cold case unit arrested two men for Bell's death. The men were convicted a year later.
Despite the close time proximity, the Duckett case is not related to the other homicides, detectives said.
At this point, detectives won't say if they have forensic evidence or elaborate on a possible motive.
Initially, detectives developed several different theories and leads. Hopper said the case has been widely talked about in the community.
"However, we're searching for more to corroborate that information," she said. "I'm hoping someone will contact me so we can move forward."
