PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
Portland Police Chief Mike Reese said at a press conference Friday that increased resources and community involvement are helping to reduce gang violence in the city.
Reese credited "Operation Safe Summer" for making the streets safer. In June, more than a dozen PPB officers were temporarily reassigned to the gang enforcement team to patrol hot spots, like Holladay Park in Northeast Portland.
Community members also volunteered to help keep the peace. A group called "Connected" reached out to troubled teens and gang members.
The U.S. Attorney says 17 people were indicted on federal gun related charges during Operation Safe Summer.
