VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A passerby who saw flames shooting out of a second-story unit at The Oak apartments called 911 shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday. Fire crews rushed to 11111 Northeast 48th Circle to find flames engulfing the building.

A total of four families residing in the building managed to get out as the fire quickly spread to the attic. The two people who lived in the apartment where the fire began were forced to jump from the upper level.  They were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

A second alarm was called to bring in more resources.  In all, 34 firefighters showed up to battle the flames.

A Vancouver Fire spokesman says the smoke detector wasn't working in unit in which the fire started.

The cause of the fire and damage estimates are still being assessed by investigators.
