Gilberto Perez in a 2005 mug shot following an arrest on assault charges
HILLSBORO, OR (KPTV) -
Hillsboro police have released the name of a man shot by officers who were called out to a domestic violence report.
Gilberto Perez, 29, of Hillsboro, remains at a local hospital. Police said it all started late last Thursday at the Sedona Park Apartments on Northeast Barberry Drive.
Perez shares an apartment with his girlfriend there and police said he had punched her in the face.
Hearing the commotion next door, a neighbor came over to help the woman, but the suspect stabbed him with a folding knife, police said.
Officers responded to the scene and confronted the suspect. Two officers ordered him to drop the knife from his hand, but he refused, according to investigators. One officer used a stun gun on the suspect, but that did not stop him, they said.
Officers ordered Perez to drop his knife again, police said, but instead he advanced toward them. One of the officers then fired two shots from his gun, hitting Perez.
Hillsboro police identified the officers Tuesday. Investigators said officer Brian Wilber, 37, deployed his Taser. Wilber has been on the force for 14 months.
Officer David Bergstrom, 44, shot the suspect. He has been with Hillsboro police for 11 years.
Both officers remain on administrative leave per department protocol.
The neighbor who was stabbed has already been released from the hospital, police said.
The suspect's girlfriend was also hospitalized for injuries she suffered to her face, but she was expected to be OK.
Perez has a criminal history that includes assault arrests in 2005 and 2001.
