A Beaverton High School student passed away over the weekend just a few weeks after being crowned homecoming queen.
Maddie Lauer, 14, of Beaverton, died Sunday after a tireless battle with thyroid cancer.
Maddie was diagnosed with the extremely rare form of cancer the day before Thanksgiving of 2011. Doctors only gave her months, but she lived for almost a year.
Just before she died, her peers voted to surprise her with the title of homecoming queen at Beaverton High School.
"My heart dropped, it was pretty amazing," said Maddie's mother, Andrea Lauer. "To see the crown placed on her head was just amazing. It's hard to believe that was just three weeks ago. "
It was just weeks ago, and yet it feels worlds away to the Lauers, because from that point on, they say everything changed.
"It happened really fast, and I guess part of that is a blessing and part of it is so tough," said Andrea Lauer.
Maddie passed away after cancerous tumors spread to her lungs, making it hard to breathe. The girl with the soft heart and strong soul died surrounded by those who loved her the most.
"She had a room full of people around her, it was standing room only, she knew she was loved, she knew it," said Andrea Lauer.
It's a love that in her death continues to grow and inspire hundreds. A Twitter campaign to wear purple on Tuesday is now splashed across the Internet.
Purple was Maddie's favorite color.
"Not only are people at Beaverton High School dressing up, a lot of kids in the school district and even out of the school district are participating, it's because she was such a good person," said friend Natasha Vartanian.
Purple ribbons made by her peers will also be passed out at the entry way of BHS Tuesday. It was a true testament to the influence the young queen had, in just 14 years of life.
"It's hard that she's passed now, but the love we feel is community wide now, her support team is growing and it's pretty amazing," said Andrea Lauer.
