Nick Cannon surprises local teen with HALO Award

Posted: Updated:

It was the surprise of a lifetime for a local teen.

Liberty High School graduate Matthew Ferguson received a TeenNick HALO Award for his charity work from Nick Cannon, actor and host of The TeenNick Awards.

Ferguson started his charity, Matt's Chemo Comfort Bags, when he was 15, as a response to his mother's battle with breast cancer. Since the charity began four years ago, Ferguson has inspired other students to help him fill bags with things his mother found comforting during the time, like Chapstick, stuffed animals and nail files.

Ferguson is now a student at Northern Arizona University. Nickelodeon arranged to fly him home to Hillsboro from school to film some footage of him working with his charity, telling Ferguson that the film was about teens doing exceptional things.

During filming, Cannon surprised Ferguson and told him that he had earned a HALO Award, as well as a $10,000 donation to his charity and a trip to Hollywood for the ceremony.

Ferguson is one of four teens who are receiving HALO Awards this year.
