Foot chase ends in arrest of farm theft suspect

Posted: Updated:

A foot chase in Woodburn spanned several hundred yards before sheriff's deputies caught up to the suspect as he tried to climb over a fence Thursday.

Marion County deputies said 40-year-old Alex Martusheff targeted farms and stole gasoline from irritation wheels in the fields, plus tools, batteries and shop equipment from storage sheds in the Mount Angel area.

The thefts happened between August and October and some of the victims witnessed Martusheff stealing the items, deputies said.

Marion County Deputy David Wagner spotted Martusheff on Thursday morning as he was tending to a burn pile near Highway 214 and Bonnie Road.

Upon seeing the deputy, Martusheff ran off through a field, but Wagner chased him down as they reached a fence.

Deputies said Martusheff is a familiar face to the sheriff's office. He has a lengthy criminal background that includes convictions for illegal weapons, theft and drug violations.

A sheriff's spokesman said Wagner has arrested Martusheff before and knew he had an outstanding parole violation warrant for a weapons conviction.

Anyone who thinks they may have been a victim of Martusheff's thefts is asked to contact the sheriff's office.
