Ashton Eaton Boulevard: Stretch of OR highway renamed

LA PINE, OR (AP) -

The La Pine City Council has voted to rename the portion of U.S. Highway 97 within city limits as Ashton Eaton Boulevard.

The Olympic gold medalist in the decathlon attended elementary school in the Central Oregon community and his grandparents still live there.

The Bend Bulletin newspaper reports that Eaton's mother Roz thanked the city at Wednesday night's meeting and said her son is "so humbled."

City Manager Steve Hasson says the signs for Ashton Eaton Boulevard could be ready for installation in six weeks.
