Buddy the service dog is back and he's better than ever.

Thanks to Fox 12 viewers, a disabled veteran's service dog was able to get the surgery he badly needed. Members of the community went above and beyond to donate and help make it happen.

On Friday, Evergreen Animal Hospital removed tumors from Buddy's body.

It was a reunion that John Peek had been waiting for all day. Peek's dog, Buddy, was getting out of the animal hospital after undergoing surgery.

Peek has had his companion for almost nine years.

It was several years ago that Peek noticed that Buddy had a tumor on one of his legs and near his stomach.

Unfortunately, Peek wasn't going to be able to afford the surgery because he lives on a fixed income and couldn't afford the nearly $1,000 surgery.

On Saturday, Fox 12 first ran the story about Peek and his dog.

By Tuesday, Peek said he had more than enough to cover the cost of the surgery.

"I guess people love dogs. Like I said I was very surprised and I couldn't believe it. Buddy is a wonderful dog and I didn't realize people cared that much, it's just fascinating. Buddy and I want to thank everybody that reached out and helped us out," said John Peek.

The donations didn't stop. In fact Peek said he got an extra $1,000 from people in the community.

Peek said he eventually told the bank to stop collecting any more donations and he took the extra money and gave it to Oregon Humane Society and the Southwest Washington Humane Society. Each got a $500 check from Peek.
