NEWPORT, OR (KPTV) -
Strong wind and rain rolled into Oregon and knocked down trees, blew off at least one restaurant's roof and took out the power to thousands of homes.
The storm also turned deadly on the Oregon coast, after a tree fell onto a tent near Nehalem Bay and killed an elk hunter.
The National Weather Service issued a number of warnings for the region. That included a flood warning for the Oregon and Washington coasts until 4:45 p.m. Monday.
A high-wind advisory was also in effect through 4 p.m. Gusts approached triple digits and tore apart the roof of the Izzy's Pizza restaurant on Lighthouse Drive in Newport.
A tree also came crashing down into a Seaside Fire Department truck.
The weather wreaked havoc on coastal highways. The wind led to a semi tipping over on The Astoria-Megler Bridge, shutting it down for hours. Numerous parts of Highway 101 along the coastline were closed throughout the day because of falling trees.
The Neah-Kah-Nie School district on the Oregon Coast canceled classes Monday because of a power outage. Pacific Power reported 20,000 customers in Clatsop County lost power in the morning and crews worked throughout the day and into the evening to resolve the situation.
The National Weather Service also issued a wind advisory for the North Willamette Valley, including Portland, Hillsboro, Oregon City, Gresham and Troutdale. It will be in place until 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Throughout the day, Fox 12 received reports of trees down, including one at Northeast Caden Avenue and Chestnut Street in Hillsboro that came down near a school bus stop and blocked the street.
A tree fell on two cars, including a patrol car, and caught one of them on fire on Highway 101 in Washington. Fortunately, nobody was hurt.
People inside a Cannon Beach house were also lucky to come out of it OK after a tree fell on their home and crashed through the roof above the living room.
