SOUTH BEND, WA (KPTV) -
Two cars stopped on a Washington highway for a mudslide were hit by a falling tree that ignited a fire.
It all happened at 9:20 a.m. on Highway 101 near Milepost 30 south of South Bend. A Washington State Patrol trooper was blocking traffic at the scene of a mudslide.
A driver pulled up next to the trooper to ask what was going on, when a tree came crashing down on both cars.
The impact started a fire in the engine of the trooper's car.
Because the other car was so close to the trooper's door, he wasn't able to get out of the driver's side of the car.
Investigators said the trooper scrambling across to the passenger side and narrowly escaped before his car was fully engulfed in flames.
He ran over to help the woman in the other car, pulling her out through her driver's side window.
Fortunately, neither of them were hurt.
