HAYDEN ISLAND (KPTV) -

A large falling tree branch came crashing down onto a Portland police officer on Hayden Island during an ATV training session Monday.

Police say the accident happened on the West end of the island, near port property.

The 19-year veteran was surrounded by his peers during a training exercise, when suddenly strong winds snapped off a large part of a tree, and it fell directly on to the officer, according to police.

It's not known how severe the officer's injuries are, or what portion of his body was pinned down by the tree limb.

The officer was seriously hurt, and rushed to Legacy Emanuel Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

"A lot of people are thinking about him," said Sgt. Pete Simpson with the Portland Police Bureau.

"He is a very respected officer and a 19 year veteran with the department. We come together as a family in times like this, and we to try to take care of everyone during this difficult situation."

The officer's name has not been released because several family members have not yet been notified.

Due to medical privacy, no additional medical information has been released.
