Thanksgiving holiday weekend travel rush is under way

Posted: Updated:

If you plan to hit the roads, skies or rails this holiday season, you'll definitely be in good company.

Thousands of people in the Portland metro area will be traveling over the next couple of days to spend time with family members and friends this Thanksgiving.

As of 9 a.m. Tuesday, all departures and arrivals at Portland International Airport were on time, but experts still suggest that you call your airline ahead of time to make sure plans haven't changed.

According to American Automobile Association, more than 43 million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, an increase of about 300,000 people over last year. Ninety percent of travelers plan to travel by automobile, AAA said.

Nearly half of all travelers plan to leave for their destination on Wednesday, AAA said. More than one-third of travelers plan to return on Sunday with another 25 percent expected to return on Monday, Nov. 26.

Air travel is expected to decrease about 1.7 percent this year compared to last year, AAA said.

Portland-area resident Jane Phelps departed from PDX on Wednesday. She and her husband plan to spend the Thanksgiving holiday in New York City. They'll also be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. They've been planning the trips for months.

"Just because we wanted a buffer day since we're going to the Rockettes extravaganza tomorrow night at Radio City Music Hall," Phelps said.

Drivers may have noticed that gas prices have fallen in recent days. The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline nationwide is $3.41. That's down about 27 cents from a month ago. Oregon drivers will pay about $3.52 for a gallon of regular unleaded. Washington drivers will pay about $3.52.

According to gasbuddy.com, this year's national average for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline will be the highest it's ever been on Thanksgiving.
