PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A Portland police officer badly injured by a falling tree during Monday's storm is in serious condition at the hospital.

Police said Officer Paul Meyer was hit by the tree during an ATV training session at Hayden Island. The 19-year veteran of the force was surrounded by fellow officers during the training exercise, when strong winds snapped off a large part of the tree.

Meyer was rushed to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery. He is assigned to the training division and the SERT team.

"He is a very respected officer and a 19-year veteran with the department. We come together as a family in times like this, and we to try to take care of everyone during this difficult situation," Sgt. Pete Simpson said Monday night.

Officers at the scene described the tree as being the size of a telephone pole that fell from 30 feet in the air before striking Meyer on his ATV.

An account has been established to help Meyer's family during his recovery. Donations can be made to any Advantis Credit Union branch either in person or by mail. You must reference the "Officer Paul Meyer Fund," account number 809390.

Visit the credit union's website for a list of branches.
