Kindergarten controversy over teacher changes

Posted: Updated: Nov 21, 2012 08:27 AM

Kindergarten students at Montclair Elementary School in Beaverton have been faced with a lot of change this year.

Since September, the children have had four different teachers, and parents are becoming concerned.

"I want them to get a good education.  I want the curriculum to run smoothly through the whole school year so they continue learning and doing well," Dana Bradshaw, a mom, said.

"They need consistency.  At home, at school, everywhere," another parent, Lisa Mitchell, added.

Budget cuts have forced the Beaverton School District to make layoffs and changes, including moving a fifth-grade teacher into the kindergarten class at Montclair.

But just one week later, that teacher resigned.

Since then, the district has placed one substitute after another into the class.

The parents describe it as "teacher musical chairs" and say it was far from fun for their kids.

To make things worse, parents say the current substitute is the perfect fit.

But the district says she cannot stay because they have to hire someone from the "recall list" to fill the spot.

They issued a statement to FOX 12 saying in part:

"As positions become available, teachers are being recalled from the recall list.  Unfortunately, the reduction in force process does not allow the district to offer temporary employment to a substitute while appropriately licensed teachers remain on the recall list."

That means the kindergartners will have to adjust to yet another new teacher before the school year is over.

"To add another teacher to the mix - it just doesn't make sense.  It's not the right thing to do," Bradshaw said.

The district says the position at Montclair will become available in January.

As soon as a new teacher is hired, the principal will notify parents.
