Firefighter flanked by bagpipers makes memorable proposal in exercise class

Posted: Updated:

With bagpipers playing and a camera rolling, a local firefighter interrupted an exercise class to shock his girlfriend and make a magical proposal.

The Statesman Journal captured the wild scene orchestrated by Colton Fire Chief Richard Beaudoin on camera.

It all started with the Salem Firefighters Pipes and Drums Corps marching into the West Salem Courthouse Athletic Club, where Jennifer Fergus was leading a weight training class.

Dozens of unsuspecting people who thought they were going to get a workout, instead got a front-row view from their exercise mats of a magical moment unfolding.

As the bagpipers and drummers settled in, Beaudoin, better known as Beau to his friends, emerged wearing his Class-A firefighter uniform.

"As soon as I walked in and saw her face, it was glowing and she had her hands up to her mouth and for me that was the priceless expression," Beaudoin said.

He dropped to a knee, pulled out a little blue box and popped the question.

She said yes and the captivated workout class burst into cheers.

The couple isn't wasting any time in tying the knot, either. They've already set the date for Dec. 27.
