The Black Friday shopping rush was off to an early start in Woodburn Thursday evening.
Parking lot gates opened at 7:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day for the Woodburn Company Stores' sixth annual Moonlight Madness event.
The 24-hour sale was expected to draw as many as 60,000 shoppers, organizers said.
By 4 p.m., a line of vehicles full of eager shoppers formed around the mall.
"We're hoping to find some good gifts for the kids and the grandkids," said Jerry Mothersbaugh.
Shoppers said they ate Thanksgiving dinner earlier in the evening so they would have time to shop later. Many shoppers said they were looking for Christmas gifts.
"This is my first time Black Friday shopping," said Jennifer Horton. "I dragged my mom with me, and she says it will be my first and my last."
Employees at some stores said they were prepared to work a 24-hour shift for the sale.
Shoppers faced long lines and large crowds from the start.
Event organizers recommended car pooling and preparing for potential delays due to traffic.
Oregon State Police said officers would be patrolling the area to monitor traffic. Last Moonlight Madness, officers handed out 83 traffic tickets in just six hours. Citations ranged from stopping on the highway to one driver who got busted for DUII.
The sale ends at 9 p.m. on Friday.
