Firefighters rescue dog from 15-foot hole in SE Portland

Posted: Updated:

Portland firefighters rescued a dog that fell into a 15-foot-deep hole Thanksgiving night.

Rescue crews were called out to Southeast 104th and Mitchell Street just before 6 p.m. The dog fell into what appeared to be an old well or cesspool.

The Portland Fire Trench Rescue Team was called in to save the dog. Ground pads were placed around the hole to prevent further collapse.

Firefighters were able to secure the dog using an animal restraint pole and a rope and lifted it up out of the hole.

The dog, named Frito, was then reunited with its owner.

Firefighters said Frito appeared to be OK after spending an hour at the bottom of the pit. The hole has now been covered over until it can be assessed and permanently filled up.
