Women's pro soccer league team coming to Portland

Posted: Updated:

Another top-level professional sports team is coming to Portland.

This time, it's for women.

U.S. Soccer is forming a new, eight-team professional women's soccer league and Portland is one of the founding clubs, according to the Portland Timbers.

The Timbers will operate the yet-to-be named team in Portland, which is expected to begin play in March or April.

It's the third attempt in the last decade to make a high-level professional women's soccer league work in the U.S. The previous two efforts sputtered out within three years.

Organizers believe it will be different this time, especially with the inclusion of great soccer cities like Portland and Seattle.

Timbers owner Merritt Paulson said in a statement, "We are pleased to partner with U.S. Soccer to bring a new women's professional team to Portland and to do our part to make a top-flight women's league possible in our country."

U.S. Soccer, along with the national federations in Canada and Mexico, are helping to bankroll this league.
