Burglar breaks in through store ceiling

LONGVIEW, WA (KPTV) -

A burglar finds an usual way to break into a mini-mart and the whole thing is caught on camera.

The break-in happened Tuesday morning at the Westside Shopper in Longview, WA.

That burglar, literally, dropped in while the store was closed, and the store owner was watching the whole thing from his home computer.

It's not the traditional way for a burglar to break into a business, but this one decided to cut a hole in the ceiling of this store and drop in.

"It's like a sneaky little prowler," said Mary Mclaren, who has worked at the store for the last two years.

The store owner happened to be checking his surveillance cameras around 4 a.m. from his home.

That's when he spotted something unusual and watched as the ceiling starting to fall.

"He saw a bunch of white drywall coming through, so he called 911," said Sam Yi, co-owner of the Westside Shopper.

The surveillance cameras were rolling as the suspect dropped in legs first and then makes his way around the back section of the store.

You can see him sneak around on the ground grabbing for some cigarettes.

"It looked like he knew where everything was," said Yi.

The suspect then heads to the back office and grabs money from a file cabinet before leaving the same way he came in.

"Angry and frustrated because we're just regular people trying to make a living and this guy just comes in and within five minutes takes what we did throughout the whole day," added Yi.

The suspect was gone by the time police showed up, but the damage was done and workers believe this suspect took his time to break in.

"Awfully gutsy to stay on the roof that long, at 3 or 4 in the morning and then to undo all those screws," said Mclaren.

Workers believe the burglar may be familiar with this store because oddly enough, they say, this is the exact same way someone broke into this store last year.

"Upset, violated, I want to get this guy and ring his neck," said Yi.

The store owner believes the suspect got away with about $3,500 in cash and cigarettes.
