Officer hit by tree during storm paralyzed from waist down

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland police said the officer hurt during a training exercise in last week's storm is paralyzed from the waist down.

Police said Officer Paul Meyer was hit by a falling tree during an ATV training session at Hayden Island Nov. 19. Witnesses said strong winds snapped off a large part of a tree that was described as being 30 feet in the air and the size of a telephone pole.

The 19-year veteran of the force was rushed to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery.

Doctors do not believe he will regain the use of his legs, according to the Portland Police Bureau.
