Portland State University sent out a mass email Monday detailing a reported sexual assault outside a campus dorm early in the morning.
"It's always disturbing to hear about these things happening on campus," said Alexa Bell, a student. "It's like gee, it could be you."
A 27-year-old woman told police she woke up in an alley behind her dorm after being attacked by a man. Portland police arrived on the scene at Southwest 10th Avenue and Market Street shortly after 3 a.m.
"It's just an emotional thing to know that someone in our dorm was hurt like this," said Cathy Symes who lives in Stratford. "This kind of attack has always been the boogeyman, not the actual thing."
Police said sexual assaults are still rare and the PSU Office of Public Safety already offers free escorts, but this attack is the fourth on a woman on campus in less than a year and students hope more will be done to keep them safe.
"At this point with the rapes on campus we need safe buddies who can walk us between buildings, we need better lighting, we need student activism and we need education for faculty and students," said Mary Eng, a student who lives a block away from the assault scene. "It needs to be comprehensive."
Anyone with information about this sexual assault is asked to call the Portland Police Bureau's Sex Crime Unit at (503) 823-0400. Anyone with emergency information should call 911.
