One of the two winning Powerball tickets for an estimated $587.5 million jackpot was sold in the Kansas City area.
The golden ticket was sold in Dearborn, MO, located 35 miles north of Kansas City. Another winning ticket was also sold in Arizona.
According to published reports and workers where the winning ticket was sold, the newest multi-millionaire is 52-year-old Mark Hill of Dearborn.
The Missouri ticket that matched all six numbers drawn Wednesday night was sold at Trex Mart, 17605 Hwy. Z. Trex Mart is one of 12 stores in Missouri owned by Trexcon. The winning numbers were: 5, 16, 22, 23, 29, and the Powerball number was 6.
The store, in a town of about 500 people mostly in Platte County with a small sliver in Buchanan County, was buzzing at midday Thursday about who might have held the winning ticket.
But while the winner remains a mystery, stores that sell winning tickets are awarded $50,000. And Trex Mart will cash in.
"It doesn't really matter. It's just awesome that one of us could have touched that ticket," Trex Mart employee Kristi Williams said.
"I was quite shocked. I said, 'are you sure?' It's good for the store. Kind of puts Dearborn on the map," Trex Mart store manager Chris Mauerz said.
Chain General Manager Kenny Gilbert said the company's owner, Lowell Hartell, responded happily after hearing the news and said the windfall could help fund Christmas bonuses for Trex Mart employees.
At $293.7 million, this is the largest jackpot prize ever won in Missouri and the second-largest Powerball jackpot awarded nationwide.
"If you buy Powerball tickets at this location, please find them and check them closely," said May Scheve Reardon, executive director of the Missouri Lottery. "If you find you're holding the winning ticket, be sure you sign the back and put it in a safe place until you can take it to a Missouri Lottery office. You will also want to get some legal and financial advice before you claim."
Missouri Lottery officials said the state is now second only to Indiana when it comes to Powerball winners. Wednesday night's winning ticket sold in Dearborn was the state's 27th.
In 2010, a convenience store clerk in the mid-Missouri town of Marshall won a $258 million jackpot. Four years earlier, a group of 13 Missouri state employees claimed the $224 million ticket.
"It is so exciting to sell one of these Powerball tickets," Reardon said. "In addition, we sold two tickets that matched all five white balls, which means they each win $1 million. Three millionaires in one night is a wonderful night!"
The $1 million winning tickets were sold at: Casey's General Store, 4800 S. Rangeline in Joplin; and Sunfresh, 2415 NE Vivion Rd. in Kansas City.
"We want winners to take their time and think through this clearly. We don't want them to feel rushed," Reardon said.
The winner has 180 days to claim their prize.
The multi-million dollar winner can select to get the jackpot prize in 30 payments over 29 years or in one lump-sum payment. If no choice is made in 60 days, the jackpot is automatically paid in 30 payments.
With this one run, Missouri sold over $28 million in Powerball tickets. The Missouri Lottery Commission said $10 million of that goes back into the state's public education.
