'Spouse' added to WA license forms for gay marriage law

OLYMPIA, WA (KPTV) -

"Bride" and "groom" will remain official terms on Washington marriage licenses when the state's same-sex marriage law goes into effect.

State workers had debated eliminating gender-specific terms in favor of more neutral phrases. A decision has now been made to combine the two.

The term "spouse" has been added to the forms, along with "bride" and "groom." Couples can choose to check whichever box they prefer.

The original proposal was to eliminate the more familiar terms in favor of simply replacing them with "spouse."

State workers said many public comments were in favor of providing new and optional language instead. More than 100 comments were submitted in writing and at a hearing Wednesday night in Tumwater.

The new marriage license forms have been sent to auditors around the state. The forms will be used starting Dec. 6, the day the new law begins.
