Armed robber makes off with cash from Powerball ticket sales

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

While most of us were dreaming about hitting the Powerball jackpot Wednesday night, a robber came up with his own way to strike it rich at a southwest Portland convenience store.

Police responded to reports of an armed robbery just after 8 p.m. at the Urbana Market on Southwest River Parkway.

The store's 12 surveillance cameras caught the robbery after a busy day of Powerball ticket sales.

The video shows the robber pulling a gun on the clerk, demanding money and then taking off with about $1,000 from a money bag that was hidden under the cash register.

"My boss lost a lot of money," said clerk Jaren Kamerer. "It's the holidays. We're going to need that money."

Kamerer wasn't working at the time but knows the clerk who was.

The suspect is described as a white male in his 20s, 6'1", thin build, wearing a gray hoodie and a bandana over his face.

Kamerer and the store's owner believe the timing of the robbery was no accident.

"It was Powerball day. We sold a lot of tickets that day. So he probably knew we've got a lot of money stored somewhere."

Officers, including a police dog, searched the neighborhood but did not locate anyone matching the suspect's description.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to contact Portland police.
