They ran out of exactly what they were trying to steal.
As a result, two would-be thieves left behind a big piece of evidence at the Broadmoor Golf Course in northeast Portland.
"One of our guys came in earlier in the morning and noticed there was a truck here," said equipment manager Brian Scruggs. "There was a trailer parked here with a bunch of 55 gallon drums in it."
Security camera video obtained by FOX 12 shows how a plan to steal fuel fell apart.
A truck towing a trailer backed up to a pair of gas tanks behind a maintenance building at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday. The trailer was loaded with several barrels to transport the stolen fuel.
Two men got out of the truck and they attempted to open the gas tank's valves. After about 15 minutes of unsuccessfully trying to access the gas tanks, the men appeared to suddenly become nervous.
They jumped back in the truck and tried to drive away, but the engine wouldn't start. Scruggs said the truck ran out of gas.
"I think it's great. I think they're going to be on world's dumbest criminals," said Scruggs."They came down here unequipped and unprepared and left their vehicle here. At some point you're going to get caught if you leave your rig down here."
Police towed the vehicle and the trailer the next morning. No arrests have been made but Scruggs hopes the license plate leads police to the suspects.
The golf course just installed the security camera system on Friday because of a string of recent thefts on the property.
