Local football player attacked in California making progress

Friends and family are hopeful about the progress being made by a former Mountain View High School football player who was attacked in October.

Police said Tyler Burton, 21, was punched in Redding, CA, where he attends school and plays running back for Shasta College.

Police said the incident started after Burton accidentally bumped into someone walking down the street after a football game. The force of the punch knocked Burton to the ground and his head slammed into the pavement, according to investigators.

Burton was put into a medically induced coma at one point.

The suspect, Andres Rodriguez, was arrested on assault charges.

Friends hosted a fundraiser Monday night at the Main Event Bar and Grill in Vancouver, selling bracelets and T-shirts to help Burton and his family.

"He is fighting, he is amazing, there are miracles happening and he's talking a little bit," said family friend Kate Lelo.

Lelo said Burton has been able to move his hands, even giving his father a high-five.

Lelo also said NFL referee Don Carlsen heard about what happened and plans to give his colleagues bracelets to wear.

Burton was expected to leave the hospital Tuesday for a special care facility.
