Can dogs really drive cars? Pups put to test

AUCKLAND (KPTV) -

Man's best friend could soon be man's new chauffeur in New Zealand.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Auckland is putting some very special dogs through driving lessons.

Trainer Mark Vette helped create a mock car to train the dogs before they jumped into a real driver's seat recently.

After five weeks of indoor training on changing gears, braking and steering, the dogs finally went behind the wheel of a real, modified car.

Following commands and directions from their trainers, Monty, Ginny and Porter successfully drove a modified car at an off-road track.

"A couple of days ago, the car was going too fast. The trainer nearly got run over," Vette said.

So why train dogs to drive? The SPCA says it wants to change the perception of rescue dogs and show how smart they can be.

Monty the dog will put his driving skills to the test on national TV in New Zealand on Dec. 10.
