PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland police arrested a man for allegedly pointing a rifle while yelling and swearing in southeast Portland.

Officers responded to the area of Southeast 65th Avenue and Rhone Street Wednesday evening after receiving reports of a man in the street armed with a knife and possibly a gun.

Officers said they heard a man yelling and swearing when they approached the area. Using available cover, the officers said they saw the man kneeling and pointing a rifle at something not visible to the officers.

Investigators said the man put the gun down after the officers asked him to, and he was taken into custody without further incident.

The man was later identified as 31-yera-old Aaron Shaffer.

Police said Shaffer appeared to be struggling with a mental health crisis at the time of his arrest.

Shaffer was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of felon in possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon.
