Volunteers make hundreds of bikes for kids in need

Hundreds of volunteers worked into the night Thursday, building bikes to be distributed to kids across southwest Washington.

The third annual Bike Building project, sponsored by Waste Connections, provides bicycles to hundreds of children in need around Christmas.

The event took place in a warehouse next to Columbia Machine in Vancouver, and hundreds showed up to help build more than 300 bikes.

"Nobody ever forgets the joy of coming out and seeing their first bicycle, and that's what we want to replicate for hundreds of kids," said Waste Connections Manager Scott Campbell. "We know a lot of these bikes will go to kids who've never owned a bike, let alone ridden on one before."

Eight different styles of bikes were assembled at the event, and designed for both boys and girls.

All of the bikes will go out to local fire districts, the Clark County Sheriff's Posse and other community groups who will provide Christmas meals and presents to families in need this year.

In addition to the bikes, each child also receives a new helmet.

"The kids we are giving these to may not have an opportunity to get another toy this year, and it's a big deal for them," said volunteer Derek Ranta.

"Imagining the joy this will bring them is pretty special."
