Deployment date nears for Oregon Guard troops

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Troops with the Oregon Air National Guard's 142 Security Forces Squadron held a mobilization ceremony Tuesday in Clackamas ahead of an upcoming deployment to Qatar.

Thirty airmen participated in the ceremony at Camp Withycombe in Clackamas. They'll now head to Elgin Air Force Base in Florida before spending six months helping with the American withdrawal from Afghanistan.

They won't leave until January, meaning the troopers will get to remain in Oregon for the holidays.

"It's a rare treat. When we go on these missions, normally it overlaps with the holidays," said Master Sgt. Christopher Rich. "So getting to stay home with the family is really nice."

The unit previously deployed to the Middle East in 2009 when approximately 30 Airmen mobilized to Kirkuk, Iraq for six months in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
