DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Police are investigating an accident where a child was hit by a vehicle in DeKalb County.

It happened Tuesday afternoon in the 3400 block of Kensington Road just before 3 p.m.

Investigators with DeKalb County police said Robert Love, 5, was struck on the property of Kensington Station Apartments in Decatur as he walked home with an 8-year-old boy.

Investigators said Robert approached an intersection on the property of Kensington Station Apartments around the same time as a FedEx delivery truck did.

Mekka Parish with DeKalb County police told CBS Atlanta News conflicting witness reports have hindered their investigation.

"There is no evidence at the scene that can lead detectives to a conclusion that the FedEx truck did strike the child," Parish said.

Robert was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. The other child was not injured.

The FedEx truck was taken in for further testing. The driver was questioned and released.

Several people have left stuffed animals to form a memorial site where Robert was killed.

Neighbor Henry Benjamin was brought to tears after hearing the news. He told CBS Atlanta News that he knows Robert's family.

"I'm real sad about it, because the boy was only 5 years old," Benjamin said.

Neighbors said no matter what happened, they're offering support to Robert's family.

"It's really sad. Everyone is hurting. The whole community is hurting," Benjamin said.

Steve Barber with FedEx Global Communications released a statement: "We are heartbroken about this child and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. We are actively cooperating with authorities in their investigation."
