A Washington County judge sentenced Samantha Gormiley to two years in prison Tuesday for the November 2011 death of Nick Baker.

The judge handed down Gormiley's sentence after she pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide as part of a plea deal. She was indicted on one count of second-degree manslaughter and reckless driving in March.

Baker, 23, was hit and killed while walking in a crosswalk on the morning of Nov. 30, 2011, near Canyon Road and Southwest Watson Avenue in Beaverton. Investigators determined Gormiley, of Aloha, was driving at speeds of 64 to 70 miles per hour just before the crash occurred, prosecutors said in court.

Baker was jaywalking when it happened, according to prosecutors and Gormiley's defense attorney. He was on his way to the Beaverton Transit Center so he could get to work, prosecutors added.

District Attorney Jason Weiner gave a lengthy presentation in court that detailed the crash and Gormiley's behavior leading up to it. He characterized her behavior leading up to the crash as reckless, an accusation Gormiley's defense attorney denied.

Several people addressed the judge before Gormiley's sentence was handed down, including members of Baker's family and Gormiley's family.

Gormiley then apologized to Baker's family.

"Every time I look at my children, I think about Nicklas," Gormiley said while crying.

Gormiley faced a minimum of one year and a day in prison. Weiner asked the judge to impose a sentence of three years.

In addition to her time in prison, the judge ordered Gormiley to pay more than $10,000 in restitution. She'll face three years of supervision once she's released.

Baker's mother told reporters outside court that she wished Gormiley's apology would have come sooner.

"He didn't deserve to die that day," Cheryl Baker said during the hearing.
