Employees react quickly to chaos inside Clackamas Town Center

Posted: Updated:

When shots were fired inside the Clackamas Town Center Tuesday, many employees jumped into action to protect themselves, their coworkers and their customers.

Deputies said they've received plenty of reports about people helping others out as chaos erupted inside the mall.

Some workers said they thought the first loud noise was simply the sound of packages hitting the ground. As the gunfire continued, they realized something was very wrong.

Many people ran for cover inside stores and made their way into the back rooms of the businesses.

Mark Hake works at GameStop and he said an announcement came over the intercom telling everyone to lock their door.

"Anyone that was in our store, we closed the gate at that point, we weren't opening it," Hake said. "We weren't letting anyone in or out at that point until we knew what else was going on."

Hake said his initial reaction wasn't one of fear for himself, but concern for others.

"The first thing that came to my mind was my family, knowing that they live right across the street and what could go on outside."

As people evacuated the mall, many left personal items behind. Deputies said everyone will get their belongings back, but it might not happen right away.

Deputies said all those items are secure and they are working with mall staff on a plan to get it all returned to the rightful owners.
