Police evacuate Gresham Fred Meyer after gun scare

GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

A false report of a man with a gun forced police to evacuate a busy grocery store in Gresham Saturday evening.

A spokesperson for Fred Meyer said a customer in the store, located at 2497 Southeast Burnside Rd., called 911 and reported seeing a man with a gun inside.

Gresham police evacuated the store and took one man into custody. Police said the man did not have a gun and is a local homeless man who became aggressive and agitated. Officers said he is known to hide behind cars in the parking lot.

"Everybody's on panic mode," said Shawnie Fenrick, who works nearby. "Everybody's going to overreact now because no place is safe. Movie theaters aren't safe. Churches aren't safe. Schools aren't safe. Malls aren't safe. What's safe?"

Gresham police said they understand that the public is on edge after the two mass shootings that occurred this week.

The store reopened to the public.
