OHSU extends health care coverage to transgender employees

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Oregon Health & Science University is extending health care coverage to transgender employees.

OHSU made the announcement regarding its new policy Monday. The hospital said the decision was made after an extensive internal review of its health benefits, along with discussions with transgender advocates.

The change extends coverage for care related to gender transition. The American Medical Association designates transition-related health care as medically necessary.

OHSU joins several other notable Oregon entities in making its employee health insurance coverage inclusive of medically necessary care for transgender employees, including the city of Portland and Multnomah County.

OHSU said other major companies worldwide have made similar moves, including Coca-Cola, Ford, Google, Intel, Pepsi, Walt Disney and Sears.
