Ryan Croft digs for earthworms as a source of protein. (Dec. 18, 2012/FOX Carolina)
ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -
Some predict a dire day on Friday. They're basing it on the Mayan calendar, believing the date 12-21-12 marks the end of the world.
There are some in the Carolinas getting ready for any major changes in the future.
Asheville's Ryan Croft was featured on National Geographic's Doomsday Preppers series. He's a gun inventor and designer and he's taught his family to survive on unconventional foods like mice, algae and worms.
Croft is in the midst of finishing his newest design project, the Joshua MK5 rifle. He said it's a mix between the AR15 and the AK47, with all of their best attributes and more simple for the average shooter, effective for whenever and whatever happens on doomsday.
He doesn't believe the world will end completely, and he doesn't want it to. Croft likens "doomsday" to a great event, like the start of the war in Iraq, which could turn parts of the world upside down.
"I'm a realist. I'm not going to put my head in the sand and the world is in a dark place right now. The world is unsure of itself," Croft said.
He said he's taught about economic collapse and has seen it firsthand. "There are places on fire right now."
A Gulf War veteran, Croft said he wants to be prepared and that comes with tools "in the form of knowledge" to guarantee survival.
He wants not only his family to make it through anything, but society as it is today, so he hopes others take steps to prepare, too.
The Vatican came out earlier in December with a statement that the world will not be ending this week. Its top astronomer said while some models show the universe may break away at some point, it won't be for billions of years.
The new Joshua MK5 rifle is expected to be unveiled by February or March.
Croft's company, Amendment Arms Inc., is having a meet and greet Wednesday afternoon at Franks New York Deli in Asheville for anyone who wants to learn more about the gun.
