Parrish Bennette
Yashanee Vaughn
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
A teenage murder suspect who police said killed a Portland girl is facing new charges alleging he assaulted a jail deputy.
Parrish Bennette is being held in the Multnomah County Jail as he awaits trial in connection with the murder of his onetime girlfriend Yashanee Vaughn.
On Sunday night, Bennette refused to return to his cell, a sheriff's spokesman said. As a deputy approached him to force the issue, Bennette attacked him, but was quickly subdued and returned to his cell, according to the sheriff's office.
The jail deputy suffered only minor injuries.
Bennette's newest criminal charges of assaulting a public safety officer and resisting arrest will be dealt with in juvenile court because he's still not 18 years old.
However, he's still being tried as an adult in Vaughn's death. A forensic scientist said in court earlier this year that Vaughn was shot in the head, and her body was later dumped at Rocky Butte in northeast Portland. It took four months for police to find the body in a shallow grave.
