Astoria landslide forces evacuations of homes

ASTORIA, OR (KPTV) -

A landslide brought down trees and mud behind the Clatsop County Jail in Astoria.

Astoria Public Works Director Ken Cook said strong winds swung the trees around in the topsoil that had been saturated by the rain.

The trees then toppled down a steep hillside.

Three homes were evacuated and one sustained a damaged front porch and starched siding. The people living in those homes will have to find places to stay until a geotechnical engineer from Portland surveys the scene Thursday morning.

The engineer will assess the stability of the hill and any potential threats to the evacuated homes, according to the Astoria city workers.

Nobody was hurt.

Debris from the landslide is now covering Duane Street, which dead ends behind the jail.
